WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee and possibly America’s first African-American president, rejects the notion that he is distancing himself from African-American constituents as he seeks to win broader support in the general election...

WASHINGTON - As flags fly in special commemoration and fireworks boom in the streets this week, many people across the nation – including African American newspaper publishers – will not only reflect on the freedoms that have been gained since the July 4, 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence, but also on the promises that are yet unfulfilled...

When the late evening hours find most people winding down from a busy day, it is just getting started for Callie Herd. A native of Memphis, she is the creative force behind www.ctherd .blogspot.com, a web-based resource that provides valuable information to parents and students seeking advice and guidance on the college preparation and application process...

Is Barack Obama Radical?

Randolph Meade WalkerIn the aftermath of Senator Barak Obama’s clinching of the Democratic Presidential Primaries, I was asked by a reporter from the Canadian Broadcast Network if Obama was radical. I replied that he was in one sense that I could readily assert. I said he was radically different from most people in that he had the ability to bring together people from opposing views into a dialogue that yielded a workable synthesis...

Wright showed U.S. where it was wrong, stirred others

During his Memphis days, Richard Wright began the serious reading that he hoped would help him develop the skills of the authors he admired. (Courtesy photo)It has been nearly 100 years since Richard Wright was born, 63 years since he published “Black Boy,” his autobiography about the issues that encumber the development of black masculinity, and 48 years since his death. Yet his presence is ever with us in his writings and in the influence he has had on black writers and others consigned to the role of outsiders on American scene. Wright’s worldview was developed during the first 19 years of his life, which he spent in the South, including about two years in Memphis...

Florence M. HowardI had the chance of a lifetime in my hand and almost blew it. Well, not so much blew it as in “gone with the wind.” I did the normal thing: I peeled it, stuck it on an envelope and put it into the mailbox. I never gave it a second’s thought...

Salute to Turkey cooks up cool connection for Memphis

The dome and the minarets of the Blue Mosque are an imposing sight in Istanbul, Turkey, the honored nation for this year’s Memphis in May celebration. (Photo by George E. Hardin) Turkey, Beale St. and barbecue are three names that seem an unlikely combination, but the Beale St. Music Festival and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest—as part of the Memphis in May Salute to Turkey—provide a fortuitous connection. The annual tribute to another country acknowledges that nations are ever more interdependent in many areas, not the least of which is respecting diversity and being good stewards of the land, sea and sky...

Equity in education remains elusive 54 years after 'Brown'

The United States is a nation of laws not of men and the law, as has been written, is what the judges say it is—ultimately the judges, or justices, of the U. S. Supreme Court. Next week marks the 54th year since the Supreme Court ruled, on May 17, 1954, in Brown v. Board of Education, that separate but equal public schools are illegal under the Constitution. It was an attempt to erase a glaring blemish on the American character that had been present since the founding of the republic. Still, today the blemish is smudged but not removed and equality in education is not yet a reality...

Washington Newseum features several who worked at Defender

Moses J. Newson, a former Tri-State Defender reporter shown here in a film clip at the Newseum in Washington, is among journalists with TSD connections honored at the Washington facility. Others are L. Alex Wilson and Ernest C. Withers.Along with being acknowledged for one’s own accomplishments, one of the most gratifying feelings is to see someone you know recognized for their work. That thought is brought on by a visit to the Newseum in Washington, D. C., the museum that tells the story of the newsgathering industry...
