The Big Question: Do you tip when you dine out? If not, why not?

Myron Mays, host of "Myron at Midnite" on WRBO Soul Classics 103.5, blended the Tipping Education Campaign into his Feb. 8, 2008 show.

It’s been said that African American restaurant patrons traditionally do not tip?

Is this a myth? Is it true? Is it economics? Is it the service? Or is it just plain triflingness?

Do you dine out regularly? Are you a waiter or a waitress? What do you think?

Stacey-Waitress from Memphis

Many people are unaware that many servers make a little as $2.13 per hour and depend heavily on tips to make their paycheck.

Louis-Westwood

Tipping is tough when you don’t make much money but are taking your entire family, wife and kids out to eat. I don’t always tip because I don’t make much money.

Wayne- Restaurant Manager in Olive Branch

I work in the restaurant industry and I don’t think many people realize how much waiters and waitresses make. When I am out, I tip 15-20 percent based on the service quality and will tip as much as 30% when services is outstanding

Denise-Professional Building on Union

Rotunda- Driving down Walnut Grove in Memphis

I normally tip according to the quality of service I receive.

Dejuan-Truck Driver on the road

I tip because I would want someone to do the same for me if I worked as a server

Rick-Security worker in Hickory Hill

I try to tip every time I go out. I know that servers don’t make a lot of money.

Robert-Piccadilly Worker from Mendenhall & Knight Arnold

It hurts when waiters and waitresses treat patrons with respect only to get no tip.  They will even go so far as to only tip a dollar when they will have 30 people to a table. My heart goes out to all of the waiters and waitresses out there. I understand how they feel.

99% of you who called in said that you make sure you tip when you dine out and absolutely no one admitted to not tipping. Although we know you are out there!

DO THE RIGHT THING!

Just imagine if you were a waiter or a waitress and depended on tips. Would you want for your customers to do the right thing, of course you would? I mean, minimum wage is not a whole lot of money, so $2.13 is really not a whole lot of money. Lets look at the flipside, as a customer when you spend your hard earned money; you expect the best service possible, with a smile. With that being said, we should not ask for anything we are not willing to give ourselves In other words, it takes both sides to solve the problem.

Kinfolks, by all means, do the right thing.
