The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the only soul music museum in the world, is featured on the cover of the new AT&T Real White Pages directory serving Greater Memphis.
More than 580,000 copies of the AT&T Real White Pages have been produced for distribution in the area this year. Delivery starts this week and lasts approximately four weeks. The directory also will be available to new residents and businesses throughout the year.
“We are pleased to feature the Stax Museum on the cover of our new AT&T Real White Pages directory for Memphis,” said Bill Ray, AT&T director of External Affairs.
“We’re always working to make our directories an even greater value to our customers because our directories are critical to the success of local businesses and are an important resource for the communities they serve.”
What began as a tiny record store and recording studio in an old movie theater in southern Memphis grew to become one of the most important music labels in the world. After the modest Capitol Theater was transformed into Stax Records in 1960, it began launching the careers of unknowns who would become icons, cranking out a massive catalog of smash soul hits by the likes of Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, the Staple Singers, Booker T. & the MG’s and dozens of other artists whose influence remains vital in today’s music.
The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, located at the original site of Stax Records, pays tribute to all of the artists who recorded there and showcases a rare and amazing collection of more than 2,000 interactive exhibits, films, artifacts, items of memorabilia and galleries.
“We are delighted to have the Stax Museum featured on the cover of this year’s AT&T Real White Pages directory,” said Tim Sampson, communications director for the Soulsville Foundation, the nonprofit organization that operates the Stax Museum, Stax Music Academy and The Soulsville Charter School.
“This means that, for the next year, the museum will be front and center anytime someone picks up an AT&T Real White Pages directory. The covers will remind residents and visitors that Memphis has a rich musical history and that there is now a world-class attraction where Stax Records once stood.”
