Many minority businesses are located within inner city neighborhoods and often the residents within those areas are unable to support and patronize these minority businesses.

MMBC has created the 2008 Economic Development Fair (EDF), scheduled Aug. 26-28 at the downtown Memphis Cook Convention Center. The economic development agency has assembled an all-star cast of corporate and community leaders to discuss and implement a plan to increase prosperity within inner city neighborhoods with focus on the Memphis of Tomorrow.

For the Economic Development Fair, inner city neighborhoods are defined based upon several characteristics: high ethnic concentration, declining “big box” retailers, low/declining homeownership, high unemployment, high concentration of “first time” offenders and high a concentration of single family households.

The Economic Development Fair includes five seminars:

CEO/Presidents Roundtable
Nine of the top Presidents and CEOs of national and global corporations headquartered in Memphis will discuss their commitment to Memphis. Larry Jensen, President & CEO of Commercial Advisors, LLC, will guide the session. The panel includes:

• William Rhodes – Chairman, President & CEO of AutoZone
• David Bronzak – President & CEO of FedEx Express
• Charles Burkett - President of First Tennessee Bank
• John Faraci – Chairman & CEO of International Paper
• Larry Cox - President & CEO of Memphis/Shelby County Airport Authority
• Gary Shorb - President & CEO of Methodist Healthcare
• Phillip Trenary – President & CEO of Pinnacle Airlines
• Dr. William Evans – Director & CEO of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
• Michael Isakson – President & COO of ServiceMaster Clean

Inner City Franchising Seminar: Features franchises that see the value in locating businesses in inner city communities and ideally provide minority ownership opportunities.

Model Diversity Corporation Seminar: Spotlights three corporations that practice inclusion at all levels of their organizations and they will share best practices that impact the success of their companies.

Emerging Markets Seminar: Highlights companies that have emerging market divisions and see the value in the buying power of these markets. They will also discuss the impact that the “browning of America” will have on their long-term marketing strategies.

Community Renaissance Seminar: Brings together community agencies, Community Development Corporations (CDCs) and the church/faith-based community to assist inner city residents in addressing critical issues of unemployment, credit repair, home ownership, jobs for felons and much more.

Other guest speakers include: George Fraser, speaker and renowned author of “Success Runs in Our Race”, “The Ten Best Business Opportunities for Blacks In America” and “Click” (Power Breakfast, Wed., August 27); MMBC Community Spirit Award recipient Coach John Calipari, Head Coach, University of Memphis Men’s Basketball, and former U. S. Congressman, Rev. Dr. Floyd Flake, Senior Pastor of Greater Allen A. M. E. Cathedral Church.
