First Horizon National Corp., has made it onto the AARP honor roll for the sixth consecutive year. This year, it remained in the top 10 – weighing in at No. 7.
“Maintaining a workforce with the skills and accumulated experiences of a broad group of professionals has been a major contributing factor to our company’s success through the years,” said Bryan Jordan, First Horizon CEO.
“We are pleased by AARP’s consistent recognition of our belief in the strength of a workplace that acknowledges the unique contributions of all its employees.”
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by 2016 one in three workers will be 50+; up from 28 percent of the workforce in 2007. Employers looking to maintain their competitive edge will have to work hard to catch up if they don’t begin appealing to older employees, the AARP says.
The AARP Best Employers for Workers Over 50 award honors those businesses that are on the cutting edge. These companies all have innovative practices toward workers 50 and older such as recruiting practices; education and career development; job sharing; flexible scheduling; and health care and retirement benefits.
First Horizon National Corp., the only Tennessee company to make the AARP list, provides financial services through more than 200 bank locations in and around Tennessee and 14 capital markets offices. It offers a wide range of programs and services to support its diverse workforce, company officials said.
For example, older workers are assigned a personal counselor to assist in retirement planning, provided access to Mayo Clinic resources and targeted as part of their recruitment efforts. More than one-quarter of the company’s workers are 50 and older. The company also offers a phased retirement plan, workplace flexibility and long-term care insurance for all employees.
“The older workforce will be increasingly important in the future, with the availability of younger workers on the decline. Additionally, more employees nearing retirement age are making plans to stay on the job,’’ said AARP Tennessee director Rebecca Kelly.
“It’s wonderful to see a company like First Horizon recognize the need to go above and beyond the others to ensure a productive workforce for the long-term.”
