Leadership Memphis, Diversity Memphis and other community partners will host the second annual Multicultural Memphis Breakfast on Nov. 13. This year’s breakfast will focus on multicultural education and will highlight student fine-arts performances by Memphis City Schools students. The Multicultural Memphis Breakfast will be held at the Holiday Inn, University of Memphis Ballroom from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Speakers include Andy Duck, ESL Program Supervisor at Memphis City Schools, and Dr. Karen Weddle-West, Assistant Vice Provost for Graduate Studies at the University of Memphis.
Weddle-West will discuss models of excellence achieved through diversity in educational and workplace settings.
“During the breakfast, Dr. Weddle-West will analyze trends in multicultural education and describe its movement from ‘educating the culturally disadvantaged’ to educating ‘the culturally different’ to ‘working in a multicultural setting’ to ‘managing diversity’ to ‘celebrating differences’ and finally to ‘achieving excellence via diversity,’ said David Williams, president and CEO of Leadership Memphis.
Duck will offer statistical data from Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools with reference to the growth of multicultural families in the Memphis community.
As part of its programmatic goals, Leadership Memphis continues to bridge divides and embrace inclusivity within the community.
“This event will be a great example for how our community must move forward to welcome and value all people,” said Williams.
Along with Leadership Memphis and Diversity Memphis, community partners for the breakfast include The Memphis Regional Chamber-International Business Council, Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis, Greater Memphis Immigrant Task Force, Facing History and Ourselves, Memphis City Schools and the Memphis World Trade Club.
