SCLC Sponsors Teen Summit During National Convention
Within a month, thousands of people from across the nation will arrive in Memphis to attend the national convention of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).  Part of the conference will involve specific programs for youth.

A “Teen Leadership Summit” will be held at the Peabody Hotel on August 3rd and 4th.

“These education sessions will provide young people with vital messages designed to help them be informed, inspired, encouraged and empowered.  SCLC wants to do everything possible to help children and teenagers make wise choices so they can become productive citizens,” said Dr. Dwight Montgomery, President of the SCLC Memphis Chapter.

Sessions will include how to prepare for college, money management, communication skills, dangers of suicide, risks associated with sexual behaviors and how young people can steer clear of crime.

“We at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office support and appreciate the efforts of the SCLC through the ‘Teen Summit.’  With more and more violent crimes being committed by juveniles, these training sessions will be particularly helpful for youth and their families,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Young people who join the Memphis Chapter of the SCLC will be able to attend the summit events for $10.  Non-members of the SCLC will have to pay $75.

During the summit, “Collection Plate Records” and the musical group “Dula” will perform concerts designed to reach young people with positive messages delivered in “rap” style.  The groups will continue to present free concerts after the conference ends for youth who participate in various community service events sponsored by the SCLC.

For more information about the conference, call Dr. Dwight Montgomery at (901) 488-4798.  Conference registration is also available on line at www.sclcboss.org or www.sclcnational.org.
