Ask Myron: Find soul in the ‘Basement’
Looking for something to do on Sunday nights? Of course you are! Well, look no further. The Basement Soul Lounge kicks off at the Rumba Room at 303 South Main this Sunday night at 6.

The Basement Soul Lounge is a great mix of live music, spoken word poetry as well as comedy hosted by yours truly.

If you’re looking for that neo soul vibe, come on down to check out The Tim Terry Experience. Tim is a local product and he’s cutting a new groove in the track that says Memphis is still a hotbed for talent. By the way, check out Tim’s MySpace page. This guy is good.

Remember the Michael Jackson Tribute show that took place at the new Daisy a few months ago? My friend Corey Davis and Rebirth Memphis, the same group that brought you that show, are the minds behind this one as well. Expect plenty of surprises.

The Basement Soul Lounge will take place each first and third Sunday. Admission is $10 per person and only $5 if you get there before 7 p.m.

For more information, call 901-246-7454 or visit the Memphis Rebirth homepage at www.memphisrebirth.com.

On Another Note:

After attending last Saturday’s Will Downing and Najee show at the Cannon Center, five words came immediately to mind: “I had a great night!”

Najee made a surprise entrance into the crowd at the beginning of his set. I was sitting there waiting on him to enter on the stage when all of a sudden I saw the spot light just a few rows away from me. Then I realized that it was Najee, down there with us.

Will Downing has to be one of the most underrated artists out there. While he was performing, I could not help but feel like he was reminding me of someone. Then it finally hit me. He reminds me a lot of Luther Vandross.

Am I the only one who feels that Downing could fill the void left by Luther? His personality even reminded me of him. This guy put on one heck of a show. He’s definitely a class act.

Local artist Cassie was stellar as the opening act. Be on the lookout for this guy. I’ve got a feeling he’s going to make some major noise. Props to my friend Marcus Dorris of Mix and Mingle Entertainment for putting on a classy event and helping to keep good music alive.

NOTE: R&B singers Kem and Laura Isabor will be at the Cannon Center on Dec. 12. Meet me there.

Ask Myron:

Q: “Here’s a trivia question for you Myron. Which musical family act was once considered the new Jackson 5? Let’s see how good you really are.”

A. Bruce, Memphis

A: First of all Bruce, I‘m really good. Now down to business. Virtually every child group that has come along after the Jackson 5 has been considered the new Jackson 5, mainly because the Jackson 5 influenced them all. For instance, you have New Edition, New Kids on the Block, ’N Sync, 98 Degrees and nearly every “boy band” that has ever existed after them. But I’m pretty sure you’re probably talking about “The Sylvers”, a group formed right here in Memphis. You probably thought I’d dance my way around that one huh? Come on Bruce, you know I’m a DJ right?
