Michael Jackson’s ‘This is It’ – Captivating
by Dwight BrownNNPA News ServiceMichael Jackson’s life far too often overshadowed his talent. But as you watch “This is it,” a work-in-progress documentary, with footage that was never necessarily meant to become a theatrical feature-length film, you have to ponder, “What pop artist was or is better?” | Michael Jackson’s influence is woven through the creative process of the mammoth, ambitious show. “This is It.” (Photo courtesy of NNPA)
|
Elvis could sing, act and gyrate, but he couldn’t dance. And his talent didn’t extend into creating musical theater. Madonna takes elaborate shows around the world, but she has a voice only a mother could love. The Beatles have a catalogue of music that is unmatched to this day, but on stage they just stood sang and played instruments. As the film starts, dancers convene for what was to be Michael Jackson’s final rehearsals for a 50-night performance schedule in London. Some poignantly reveal how important it was to dance with him. One hoofer proclaims, “I was searching for something to give me meaning. This is it.” Skeptics might point out that Jackson was no Dalai Lama, L. Ron Hubbard or Dr. Phil. But, to a young pop dancer, the chance to perform with the person who changed dance for the MTV generation is about as good as it gets. Rehearsal footage depicts a fit MJ; lean – not emaciated, energetic – not lethargic, lively – not near death’s door. He jumps, twists, turns and hops with the same gusto and precision as his back-up dancers. Only they are in their 20s and MJ is 50! That’s right – half a century old! Often, he is not singing in full voice, as he tries to preserve his vocal chords for the up-coming concerts. Though some may say his vocals have been enhanced, he sings a whole lot better than some of today’s top artists, like Justin Timberlake. When he goes full out, he’s pitch perfect, his voice is flexible and emotional. This film is ambitious musical theater that includes movie clips, elaborate sets (production designer Bernt Amadeus Capra, set director Donald Elmblad), provocative costumes and magical lighting. The most astonishing feat is MJ’s insertion into a song in the movie “Gilda,” starring Rita Hayworth and Humphrey Bogart. A machinegun-wielding Bogart chases Michael, and in black and white footage – courtesy of a blue screen – you can see how the concert magic is being created. There is another song in which dancers cavort on frames like a construction site on the back of the set that is bathed in a warm moss green metallic light that is simply mesmerizing. Jackson’s handprints are all over this mammoth, ambitious show. Credit director Kenny Ortega for the visual splendor and day-to-day coordination, but as the footage attests, MJ is the captain of the ship. Both the choreographer and vocal supervisor Dorian Holley defer to him. The Earth Song sequence is a patience-testing misstep. On film, in a setting that must represent the Amazon, a young child runs through a forest that is being demolished by bulldozers. The moment is so sentimental and politically correct that it grates on the nerves and adds seven minutes to a 112-minute film that could have been a tad shorter. Edited down from hundreds of hours of footage, each second is crucial; this unfinished attempt at an eco friendly message should have been left on the editing floor. “Human Nature,” “Billie Jean,” “Thriller”… the gloved one puts on a backstage show that is thoroughly entertaining—and in fact more compelling than if the production team had simply filmed the concert. Watching him create each song/performance on a sound stage is as captivating as him singing and dancing in front of a live audience. There are some who will claim this documentary is ghoulish. I think haunting is a better word, as you fathom what the music world would have been like had he lived. This enlightening, behind-the-scenes documentary gives MJ a way of setting the record straight. If any performer is more talented than he, or has left more of an imprint on a musical generation, they should step up or shut up. (Visit NNPA Film Critic Dwight Brown at www.DwightBrownInk.com.)

Thank you for the review, and thank you for showing MJ the respect he so richly deserves. As a professional classical musician, I am learning so much about the art of performance from watching him in action. As an audience member and fan, I don't think I'll ever get enough.

Well said. Michael Jackson gave hope and aspiration to the young generation, people find meaning in life to be with him and learn from him. I love the show very much and would certainly recommend it for everyone from young to old to see it. There's just so much inspiration as well as touching message to love and care for one another and our dear mother earth from this man. Gosh! we do miss him very dearly and wish he's still alive. Kind of feel very sad we hadn't made known to him our love for him. L.O.V.E you, Michael. M'sia.

I like much of what you had to say. Great stuff. I would have preferred that first line about his life overshadowing his talent. Seems you are an MJ fan to some degree, too. So, why should we constantly give credence to the overshadowing junk that were mostly lies anyway. Let's just enter the glory. Love lots of this, you have great tone. That's right. STEP UP. OR SHUT UP. Awesome line. I can't figure out why almost all critics hated the EARTH SONG part, one of my faves, and everyone I interview said that was among their top three points in the movie

I just came back from the movie. Saw This Is It for the 6th time with my husband. I like MJ because he was an amazing performer, fascinated the world with his dance moves and vocals. I will see it every other day until the end of the two week run in our theatre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Yes, I too agree with much of the article. I just wish the general public could understand the REAL story of Michael's life so that it WOULDN'T "overshadow" his talent and legacy. The American and British press (tabloid AND mainstream) were so hell-bent on reporting lies that they failed to see that the real story of Michael Jackson was much more interesting and inspiring.
As far as the film, I agree that Michael's voice still outshines current pop artists. Just watch the performance of him with Britney Spears during the 2002 MTV awards singing "the way you make me feel."
Why do people hate Earth Song???? I would have given anything to see that song live! Michael felt very strongly about that song. He BELIEVED it with every once of his being. It's not political to him, its truth. That's one of the things I really admire about Michael. He wrote about things that he believed in and he performed them with that same passion. Past performance of Earth song are riveting!! He was very theatrical, and with this song he used that to create an emotive experience for the audience aimed to make people think.

A respectful message to those who still doubt Michael jackson’s innocence: There is a reason why a depth charge of anger and grief has ignited in the hearts of millions of people. I do not mean to put down anyone who believes the opposite in any way, but I just have to speak up. Does anyone really believe that the millions talking about the miscarriage of justice Michael Jackson suffered would be prepared to overlook peodophilia just because he was talented? Because I certainly wouldn’t. The American people need to know they were effectively brainwashed by the relentless onslaught of media coverage and endless rotation of hearsay and outright lies that so-called journalists like Diane Dimond, Nancy Grace, Maureen Orth and the Smoking Gun online tabloid – amongst others – inflated into a storm of such unprecedented hostility it would convince Mr Jackson’s legal team that it would be better to settle than fight in court in 1993. In hindsight, that decision was a huge mistake. In the 2005 trial, the prosecution introduced the 1993 allegations into the trial evidence to bolster their case, this enabled Meseareau to revisit the circumstances of those allegations. Mesereau was able to satisfy a conservative jury that there was no validity to them whatsoever. Of course, little or no coverage was given to this fact, just as no attention was paid to the facts or motives of Evan Chandler or Janet Arviso. While it is understandable due to the sheer level of misinformation and non-investigation of Michael’s accusers: (Can anyone think of a single article apart from Mary Fischer’s ‘Was Michael Jackson Framed?’ that asked any serious questions about the credibilty of Michael’s accusers?); – that the myth of sexual deviancy still persists about Michael Jackson; it’s just not acceptable for this lie to stand any longer. It has caused so much pain to so many people and undoubtedly ended Michael’s life earlier. There is information out there, information I might add, that has more weight and substance than the nonsense that has been peddled for years by the majority, if not all the American media. I am asking, no, begging people to please go their local bookstore, order Aphrodite Jones’s book ‘The Michael Jackson Conspiracy,’ read Mary A Fischer’s article, go to the silencedtruth website and read Cory Rooney’s comments in the ‘Remember’ section, read Brian Oxman’s statements about Michael Jackson in The Huffington Post, and read the sbstantial legal criticism of Tom Sneddon’s years-long vendetta to prosecute Michael Jackson that is detailed in the archive section of the New York Times and many other publications. Millions of dollars American taxpayers money were spent by Sneddon in an attempt to find corroborating witnesses to the so-called alleged crimes of Michael Jackson;– an extraordinary amount, considering Sneddon found none. Out of the thousands of children Michael Jackson helped, two alleged molestation and one man linked both investigations. For most normal people, a huge alarm bell should surely be ringing. Janet Arviso and her son Gavin both admitted on the stand in 2005 that Janet Arviso had made her son lie to support her false claims that she had been sexually assaulted by staff in a J C Penny store, after she and her children had been caught shoplifting. Unlucky? Or just a family with a unnatural propensity for being in the wrong place at the right time? The Arviso v J.C Penny case I mentioned, by the way, can be found by googlign it and in American law journals. I could go on, my point is this; people need to be asking questions right now – that is, if they want to know the truth. The movement for Michael’s vindication is about enabling truth to come to bear on something that has needed exposing for a very long time, not about excusing serious crimes because of how well Michael Jackson sang. What was done to Michael Jackson must never be forgotten - and all those who talk about him being a child molester know not of what they speak.
The film? Beyond beautiful.

I LOVE DEBORAH, I LOVE DEBORAH. SAY IT GIRL, MY POINT ENTIRELY THAT I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO MAKE ALL OVER THE PLACE. WE SHOULD BE SCARED SHITLESS OF THE MEDIA . . . and what slander can due to ruin a life. ANYONE could be next. Michael's joy was stripped . . . and he was exhausted in pictures after 2003-2005, we saw the slow and public execution of a man who did no wrong! . . . People who don't get it are not thinking, and their blindness to the problem at hand can only endanger them and all of us. I hope that somehow retrocative justice will come to those who perpetuated the myths.

It is a heartbreaking story that much can be learned from. It displays the power that a scandalous and corrupt media has in our nation. The days of Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley, and Dan Rather are over. It is a wake up call! A call to take back the power of information. A call to stop humiliating and persecuting people for the sake of the almighty dollar. This man's life was DESTROYED!! His heart was SHATTERED! I see hateful comments about Michael on many sites and it literally hurts ME to read them. Where is the empathy?? Where is the desire to listen, read, and research? Diane Dimond, Nancy Grace, Hard Copy, Inside Edition, E! Television and countless others fueled a public witch hunt that turned into mass hysteria. People's emotions got in the way of logic, rational thought, and truth. Most disappointing is the fact that mainstream media picked up on all the rhetoric. Everyone LOVES investigative journalism...a good crime story. Well here's one for you: the slow killing of a man through media slander!!!
You know, Michael's story is really no mystery. Michael was never believed by the media. He was often met with condescending looks of disdain when interviewed. He was dramatic and it seemed to hinder his credibility. BUT, he TOLD his story. He told his story several times over through his music, poetry, dance, and lectures! It is really interesting to listen to album by album in chronological order and hear his story play out. He was brutally honest! He was brilliant! He will NEVER be forgotten....

I saw the pre-release screening in my town. It was truly an experience I can't describe, an experience of a lifetime. At times, I almost completely forgot I was in a movie as it felt more like a live performance. I would agreee with this post except for one thing. I don't think it was too long. I could probably watch the entire rehearsal recordings with no problem. While he will be missed greatly, this film gaurantees that he will NEVER be forgotten in the way he should be.

I also could have watched much more of this movie...Michael was so captivating to watch. I wish it had been longer, and had included more of the discussions Michael had...to watch his creative process was wonderful. Deborah, THANK YOU for your great post. I have copied it out to hand to a few of my friends who have made slight comments about their distrust of Michael. I lived in LA for many years and people there know well these vultures who lie to try to make money off of celebrities. When will our world grow up? When will our world be wise enough to see clearly when it has an angel in its midst?

I'd like to thank you for the positive article on This Is It and Michael Jackson. I'd also like to thank you for not including any references to the 1993 and 2003 unjust molestation allegations. So many who have reviewed the documentary went there which made no sense to me since the review should have been about the movie. I really enjoyed watching the genius at work and realizing, once again, what a loss to us all. The show would have been beyond fantastic. Micheal always looked to push the envelop and provide entertainment in an unexpected fashion. He wanted his fans to experience magic at his shows and to feel a sense of wonder that was so important to him. He was as dedicated to his admirers as we were/are dedicated to him. This documentary is a positive statement to his legacy. Hopefully, in time, when people realize that much of the hype that surrounded him was lies created by the media, his legacy will shine bright. The film was an absolute masterpiece, a rare glimpse of a Master creating his art.I've never before seen such perseverance in one human being as that in Michael Jackson. His whole life is a testament to that very quality. There will never be anyone like him to pass this way again, ever. We were blessed to be able to witness such in our life time, and have it preserved for all time through this film and videos of his many concerts. His music and his message will live on.

what can i say...he was the best. its just so sad and unfortunate i must say, why do we always realized things when it is already too late. if only you people from the press has showed him what he deserved during his lifetime it won't be this much painful. he didn't need love from you because he knew that he was loved by millions all around the world all he was asking was a little respect but all of you from media never stopped mock at him, he was never treated fair,no benefit of the doubt had given to him. whatever he does you always find something against him, always he is at fault in your eyes, worst terms and words had been used to put him more down..and now that he is gone you never run out of sweet words to describe him,it seems suddenly everybody loves him...are these all because of promotion, rate, fame and money. im afraid the answer is YES.we tend to forget the ethics we learned. we say we are God fearing but what shown is the opposite.my question is who will be the next victim? if only my mother tongue is english i could have said it well and more emphasized..very sad the world has become

This is Michael Jackson. This is it. This is his talent, charisma, grace and humanity. If the rehearsals were like this, the show would have been spectacular than MJ himself would have imagined. But, the film is also a reminder of what we have lost, what we will never see again in our lifetimes.. well, there won't be another MJ ever.

One more thing that I forgot to add- Including Earth song was very important! The song might not have been the best of MJ's works in terms of popularity, but MJ truly cared for nature and people. He believed in changing the world for better. I bet Earth Song was very dear to him and his creativity. I am glad they included it there. The message with the little girl is powerful and raw.
