With the New Year quickly approaching, teens may want to join a new group, expand their interests, meet new people and/or put in more community service hours. There are plenty of worthy organizations in Memphis that allow teens to do just that.

The Shelby Farms Youth, for example, hosts all kinds of community service activities such as Shelby Farms Earth Day. Now, I don’t know about you, but I am always up for new adventures; that’s how a person networks and expands his or her horizons! Through participation with the Shelby Farms Youth Alliance, teens also develop skills such as public speaking, program planning, community outreach, writing, and more. They have an opportunity to change their community and have fun all at the same time.

Jasmine Becton, 18 years old and a participant in the program, talks about her experience and the impact the program had on her:

“Shelby Farms Youth Alliance is important to me because I love nature. Nature herself is a dimension of the gift of Mother Nature, and defines our own humanness.  To make of nature an “It” to be used, is to distort the graciousness and beauty contained in the meaning of existence. Hence, nature is to be enjoyed, cherished, and reverenced. Youth Alliance allows me to experience different aspects of nature with people of all walks of life. I love being a part of YA. It is full of life lessons, but fun at the same time. From hosting community service events to taking hikes with kids in the park, YA has made me appreciate the great outdoors more. This group gives me a voice in the future of the park. I am proud to be a fellow ambassador of the park.”

So, if you are looking for something new for the New Year, you may want to check into Shelby Farms because there is always something interesting going on there.
