Actually, the Bible does NOT indicate when he was born. Look in most any encyclopedia and you will see that it originated from a pagan feast related to sun worship.

If you want a more reliable source than Wikipedia, try the Bible. Luke a lays out the entire chronology. With a little research into Jewish law and customs, regional climate, and Roman history you'll be able to get an approximate time of Jesus birth: around mid-September. Celebrating Christmas at the winter solstice was the idea of a pope a few hundred years after Jesus' death/resurrection.

Chrismas is not mentioned in the Bible. It was started by the Roman Catholic church around the 4th century B.C. And they simply adopted the existing pagan celebrations of worshipping the sun god, already established on December 21-25, as well as the existing pagan traditions (the tree, yule log, holly, misteltoe, etc) and incorporated them into the traditions of the church.
And contrary to popular belief, although the exact date of Jesus' birth isn't mentioned in Scripture, we absolutely CAN know, through Scripture, when Jesus was actually born.
The date is vitally important, as Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of the requirements of God for his people set forth in Old Testament law. Therefore, not only is his birth significant, but the timing of his birth is significant as well. The Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth, certainly didn't leave something as important as the birth of the savior of the world to chance.
Based on Scripture, we can learn that Jesus was actually conceived by the holy spirit during Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights (Jesus is the light of the world), and he was born during the Feast of Tabernacles (the world became flesh, and he tabernacled among us).
The explanation of how those dates are arrived at is much too long, and requires detailed knowledge of the courses of priesthood, laid out in detail in the Old Testament. For further information, simply do an internet search on "Jesus born Feast of Tabernacles" and you'll get all of the information you need.

Why do many Christians celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December, if that is not when he was born?
The date was chosen by the Roman Catholic Church. Because Rome dominated most of the “Christian” world for centuries, the date became tradition throughout most of Christendom.
The original significance of December 25 is that it was a well-known festival day celebrating the annual return of the sun. December 21 is the winter solstice (shortest day of the year and thus a key date on the calendar), and December 25 is the first day that ancients could clearly note that the days were definitely getting longer and the sunlight was returning.
So, why was December 25 chosen to remember Jesus Christ’s birth with a mass (or Communion supper)? Since no one knows the day of his birth, the Roman Catholic Church felt free to chose this date. The Church wished to replace the pagan festival with a Christian holy day (holiday). The psychology was that is easier to take away an unholy (but traditional) festival from the population, when you can replace it with a good one. Otherwise, the Church would have left a void where there was a long-standing tradition, and risked producing a discontented population and a rapid return to the old ways.

Not to criticize anybody, but do not always believe what they say in church...
"Although it’s not impossible, it seems unlikely. The Bible does not specify a date or month. One problem with December is that it would be unusual for shepherds to be “abiding in the field” at this cold time of year when fields were unproductive. The normal practice was to keep the flocks in the fields from Spring to Autumn. Also, winter would likely be an especially difficult time for pregnant Mary to travel the long distance from Nazareth to Bethlehem (70 miles).
“A more probable time would be late September, the time of the annual Feast of Tabernacles, when such travel was commonly accepted. Thus, it is rather commonly believed (though not certain) that Jesus’ birth was around the last of September. The conception of Christ, however, may have taken place in late December of the previous year. Our Christmas celebration may well be recognized as an honored observation of the incarnation of ‘the Word made flesh’ (John 1:14).”"

Blind following will only lead you astray. Nowhere in the Bible does it state Jesus was born on Dec 25th. If it does prove it. Ive lost count how many versions of the Bible there are...Quran 1 version only...People are so easily fooled...Pagan followers.

Hey folks, I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but it doesn't take much to look in The Word Of God and see The Truth :) Jesus was conceived on the feast of dedication (John 10:22) and was born on the feast of tabernacles, which you can find in Zechariah, in the Books of Moses and we'll be celebrating that feast forever! Merry Messiah-mas & Happy New Year 2010! Is new years on Jan. 1? Why did they call people April Fools? Blessings,
Mark

We should give our respect to our Non-Muslim friends and neighbor who is celebrating this Christmas season, however I like to share with you why 700 billion muslims in the world do not celebrate Christmas although they believe that Jesus is a great Messiah of God, and Mary was a the greatest woman on earth...
They KNOW that Jesus was not born on this day (December 25th) because God says in the Holy Quran: in Chapter Mary-verse 23-26
The pains of labor drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. She exclaimed: "Oh, if only I had died before this time and was something discarded and forgotten!" A voice called out to her from under her: "Do not grieve. Your Lord has placed a small stream at your feet. Shake the trunk of the palm toward you, and fresh, ripe dates will drop down to you. Eat and drink, and delight your eyes. If you should see anyone at all, just say: 'I have made a vow of abstinence to the All-Merciful, and [so] today I will not speak to any human being.'" (Surah Maryam: 23-26) DATES only ripe and fall off easily in autumn.
It is also in the Bible:Luke 2:8 explains that when Christ was born, “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.” Note that they were “abiding” in the field. Obviously, one problem with December is that it would be unusual for shepherds to be tending sheep in the field at this cold time of year when fields were frozen. The likely time was to keep the flocks in the fields from Spring to Autumn. Also, winter would likely be an especially difficult time for pregnant Mary to travel the long distance from Nazareth to Bethlehem (70 miles!). A more likely would have been late September, the time of the annual pagan holiday when such travel was commonly accepted.
So we do not acknowledge this day as his birthday because its stated in the Quran that he was born in Autumn.
