Ask Myron: Keeping time with Anita Baker
Hopefully many of you took my Valentine’s Day advice and followed it to a great weekend. For me, the weekend’s highlight had to be the Anita Baker show at the Desoto Civic Center.

We arrived about 6:30. There was no way I was gonna get stuck in traffic. However, 7 o’clock came, and no Anita. But then none of these concerts start on time. So we just talked and got to know the people around us.

About 7:30, fellow radio personality Bev Johnson came out to speak and welcome everyone to the show. There was no Anita, but Bev did bring out the opening act. And I have to admit, the guy was very funny, although I don’t remember his name. He actually made everyone forget that Anita Baker wasn’t on stage when we expected her to be. After he finished up, the crowd was really ready for the show.

Time: about 8:20, and still no Anita!

What were they making us wait on? Where was Anita?

Well, guess what? About 9 o’clock, the lights go down and the curtains open. Could it be? Is she here? Then, she finally comes out. Suddenly, it was like everyone forgot it was two hours later then they expected to see her.

After all of these years, Anita Baker still sounds great. As a matter of fact, she sounded just like the album. And she wasn’t singing by track either.

At what seemed like the end, I noticed that the curtains had not closed and the band was still playing, although softly. I was thinking to myself, “Maybe they are gonna play some background music until everyone leaves out of the arena.” Well, as we were getting ready to walk out, we heard a voice from the distance: “Is there anything else I can sing for you?”

It was funny watching everyone scramble back into the arena. Encore over, the curtains closed. It was a show for a great night. She was truly a class act from the time she stepped out on stage until the time she left. And yes, it was very much worth the wait.

Flashback

As I was typing what I thought would be my topic this week, I decided to play a little music. I was kind of in the mood for something from my high school years. While digging through my “legal” downloads, I ran across Guy. I know you remember them, right?

Founded by member, producer and New Jack Swing creator Teddy Riley, Guy was one of the quintessential R&B groups of the late 80’s and 90’s. Made up of Riley and brothers Aaron and Damion Hall, they went on to release three successful albums and 13 singles.

They were actually one of the best R&B groups to ever record, at least in my generation that is. What were you doing when “Lets Chill” was out? What about “Piece of my Love?” Wasn’t that “the jam?” What was your favorite Guy song? It’s been rumored for years that these guys could release new material, but who knows? However, we will always have their greatest hits, and the memories that come along with them.

Ask Myron

Q: “I hear rapper and reality show star Flavor Flav is behind on his child support payments again. Didn’t he make a lot of money for “Flavor of Love?”

R. Smith, Memphis

A: Yes, he reportedly made $5 million for all three seasons of “Flavor of Love,” but that doesn’t mean that it was spent wisely. But who knows? There could be a number of reasons why. I do know this, however: there’s never a dull moment with this guy. Did you know he plays 15 instruments? Still, he became famous by simply yelling, “Yeaaahhh Boyyeeee!” Life is amazing, huh?
