The Tri-State Defender is now accepting nominations for the 2010 Women of Excellence.
“As African-American women, we must celebrate ourselves,” said Phyllis M. Fickling, the newspaper’s general manager. “The survival of a culture and a community depends on it!”
The Tri-State Defender’s third annual salute honors women who have excelled in their careers – many after overcoming great odds – and helped shape the economic, political and spiritual currents in this region.
This year’s Women of Excellence Gala will be held April 30, with details to be announced in upcoming editions. And in keeping with the two previous events, it will be a High-Tea affair.
“I loved it,” said blues singer Ruby Wilson, the renowned Queen of Beale Street and a 2009 honoree. “It was a beautiful thing – 49 of the most beautiful women in Memphis, mentally and physically. I was glad to be among the women you honored.”
