The University of Memphis men’s basketball team headed into the Conference USA Tournament with legitimate hopes of doing enough damage to win the whole thing and make it into the NCAA’s March Madness.

For the Tigers, the tournament, which moved from Memphis to Tulsa this year, began with a match-up against the Houston Cougars on Thursday. And that's also where it ended, with Memphis losing 66-65 after clawing back from a deficit that reached double digits.

The loss to Houston left the Tigers waiting to see if they still might squeeze into the NCAA post-season tournament field.

The first-round exit aside, Head Coach Josh Pastner and two Tigers, Elliot Williams and Wesley Witherspoon, are packing new hardware. The Sporting News on Wednesday named Paster Conference USA Coach of the Year, his first postseason honor. The magazine’s 2009-10 All-Conference USA selections include Williams (first team) and Witherspoon (second team.)  Both are sophomores.

The Tigers finished the regular season with a 23-8 overall record and a 13-3 Conference USA mark. Memphis entered the C-USA Tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Earlier in the week, C-USA coaches and media tapped Williams, the league’s second-leading scorer, for first team, All-C-USA recognition; Witherspoon reaped a third-team nod.
