Guess what I’ll be doing this weekend? Ok, I guess the title of the column gave it away, but this is the perfect time to head for the local theatres.
First, I must check out “Takers”, a film that boasts a star studded cast, and follows a group of professional bank robbers who specialize in perfectly executed robberies.
They are pulled into one last job by a recently paroled cohort who is played by rapper T.I., only to be pitted against a hard-boiled detective, played by veteran actor Matt Dillon, who is dead set on solving the case and who interrupts their heist. Along with T.I. and Dillon, this film also includes such notable stars such as Idris Elba, Paul Walker from the Fast and the Furious franchise, Chris Brown and Michael Ealy.
Here’s a couple of predictions…T.I. is going to be the breakout star of the film. I can also see this film coming in at number one. In fact, I will go so far as to say it will make between $24 and $30 million over the weekend. I am usually pretty good at guessing these things. Next week, we will see, won’t we?
I didn’t get to check out “Lottery Ticket” during its opening weekend, so it will be the second movie that I will see this weekend. The story follows Kevin Carson, who lives in the projects and has to survive a three-day-weekend after his neighbors find out that he has a winning lottery ticket worth $370 million dollars. “Lottery Ticket” also has an all-star cast with Bow Wow, Ice Cube, Terry Crews, Mike Epps and others. Perhaps I’ll run into you somewhere out there this weekend.
On Another Note: Labor Day WeekendLooks like another hot Labor Day weekend in the city of Memphis, with lots going on and plenty of sizzle. Saturday is my birthday; my girl Angie P. will be performing at the Basement Lounge on Sunday, Sept. 5th, and Monday, the 6th, is my official day off at all of my jobs. I still haven’t figured out what I want to do just yet to celebrate my special day. Thanks for your e-mails and ideas; I’ve got a lot to choose from.
The last time Angie P. stopped by the Basement Lounge she rocked the house. This time it’s her birthday as well. Admission is just $10. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. See you there! By Monday, I would have labored the entire weekend so I don’t plan to do anything but relax the entire day. That is unless I find a barbeque to crash…hint hint.
Ask Myron:Q: “Myron, do you think that the whole situation with Fantasia is just a hoax?”
M. Brown, Memphis
A: I’ll be honest with you. It’s amazing how all of these things seem to have happened just as her album dropped. She appeared on “Good Morning America” and she also is starting up the next season of her reality show on VH-1. Any normal person has got to wonder if this is all an orchestrated publicity move. You might ask why did she try to kill herself? Well, my friend, I’m no medical expert, but if you’re ready to check out, there are much stronger things than aspirin. Let’s just say that, if everything was real, then she is getting the type of publicity money just can’t buy.
