Glenn Beck rally was much ado about nonsense

 Dr. Jason Johnson

Last year, I wrote a piece entitled “Glenn Beck is my Kind of Revolutionary”, which received a lot of attention precisely because I argued against conventional wisdom  and took a few, well-organized shots at Beck at the same time.

A year ago, when Glenn Beck was ascending to his television peak, the liberal left was borderline apoplectic about his rise to power. His ranting Howard-Beale-like behavior on television, the way he seemed to connect with an audience of like minded men and women, his ability to get people in a presidential administration fired with nothing more than a few episodes, many in the punditry were convinced that an unstoppable monster was being created.

I disagreed. I thought then that Beck was a joke and a coward, an example of the weak-willed nature of a spoiled and petulant strand of the Baby Boomer generation that has always been desperate to prove their virility. After Beck’s rally to “Restore Honor” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial last week, not only was my initial opinion validated, we have seen just how limited the reach of men such as Glenn Beck really is.

Glenn Beck, Fox News’ most popular television pundit, and the third most listened to radio personality in America, created quite the public stir over the last several weeks with his planned “Restore Honor” event in Washington D.C. The event was promoted like a huge pro-Beck rally, and with prominent speakers such as Sarah Palin on the schedule, many feared that Beck was going to make some sort of frightening announcement about his future political goals.

But that was just the beginning of the controversy. Beck’s rally just so happened to be scheduled on the very same day, in the very same location as Dr. Martin Luther King’s powerful, moving and nation changing “I Have a Dream” speech. Was this just a coincidence? Or was Glenn Beck attempting to put himself on the same level as one of the greatest political leaders in the history of the world?

Depends on what day you asked America’s ‘talk’ leader. At first he claimed he had no idea that his event and King’s shared the same date, only to claim later that this timing coincidence was a sign that God was approving and blessing his rally. Nevertheless, out of respect for MLK, Beck decided to give the speech two steps lower than where Rev. King stood. How gracious of him!

Al Sharpton was up in arms about Beck’s rally, and held a very powerful and moving counter-rally and many political commentators condemned the event before it began. However, the furor and handwringing about “Restoring Honor” was unneeded. After watching the programming on Saturday from beginning to end, I’m left with the same feeling I’ve always had about Glenn Beck. He is by all accounts, a media force to be reckoned with, but politically and culturally he is nothing to fear.

The entire rally was a kind of schlock-filled conservative suburbanite dream of convenient multi-culturalism and half-baked ideology. The organizers and speakers bent over backwards to claim the event was a celebration and religious in nature not political. Beck began the event claiming that Jews, Pilgrims and American Indians were God’s chosen people and the event descended from there.

They gave out fake purple hearts to people they believed to be heroes, sang off key gospel songs and put together hundreds of minutes of mainstream Christian / Republican mishmash that many people believe but none were converted. Which is really the point: Glenn Beck has a huge and powerful audience, but he’s not changing any hearts and minds at this point. In fact, putting on events such as this, attempting to co-opt Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy and claiming that his actions are driven by God Almighty have begun to slowly but surely turn off common sense Republicans let alone independents.

It’s not shocking that Sarah Palin or Martin Luther King’s right wing daughter were part of the speaker’s list. But what was more prominent is the fact that prominent Republican elected officials in Congress were conspicuously absent, or that well known Tea Party activists and conservative pundits such as Lenny McCallister publicly and vociferously rejected their invitations to the event because they considered the whole enterprise to be tactless.

So, don’t fear Glen Beck, let him and his group of marginal followers hold their public temper tantrums with Sarah Palin. It just gives the rest of us more time to actually solve this nation’s problems rather than complain about them.

What a dolt you are. Who exactly are the "rest of us" that are solving the nation's problems.

It's not Glenn Beck who frightens me. It's the masses of fearful, angry and ignorant people that are drawn to his sort of angry rhetoric. Beck's speaking style is just a little too reminiscent of Joseph McCarthy and Adolf Hitler.

You obviously did not attend, and it is also obvious that your source of information was the other left-wing progressive news sources. You are more concerned about his persona than his message. You really think that extolling the virtues of 'Faith, Hope, and Charity' are a bad thing? Progressives have done everything they can to get GOD out of the lives of the American People. This is just the continuing effort. Sharpton's rally had about 5000 people attending, and several reports have been made from people who stayed at the same hotel of those that were 'bussed in' with hotels, food, expenses all paid for by the backers. You compare 5000 to 500,000 and consider Sharpton's vitriol to be a 'powerful message'? Sharpton stumbled all over himself later that evening when O'Reilly put him on the spot. For a Reverand, Sharpton is sure full of hate. There was no hate shown at the RESTORING HONOR rally, and not one single arrest or intervention by police against any rally attendees. When interlopers tried to stir up trouble, they were surrounded by attendees to told them that they were praying for them. The closing benediction even thanked our President and the Congress to look out for them and to guide them. No one took anything away from anyone, and the economy was heavily stimulated by 500,000 people spending their OWN MONEY to get to the rally. No one was given 'all expenses paid' like some attendees at the Sharpton Rally.

"Dr. Johnson's" can be found all over the place.............he is saying what many, if not all, of the "in the dark" liberals are repeating.

I really don't want to be disrespectful to him but he offers no new insights from his "side". If this is the best he has then he is empty.

Glenn must be a genius because they other side doesn't see him coming even though he right there. You can continue to dismiss him and misunderstand him but you can't convince those that agree with them from their viewpoints........which will give this country a change in direction that is needed by all............and I mean all races.

What King's niece understands is that the Democrats have given handouts and have kept loyal followers but they have created a new type of "slave"......people who have become dependent on the government.

Marginal followers? Al Sharpton very powerful and moving counter-rally? Wake up and look at the facts, or just keep watching the marginal followers grow and take back out country. There will always be room for you, because we will have honor.

It would appear to me that this gentleman had his mind made up before he watched. Had he not he would have realized that Mr. Beck is trying to be as open and honest about his feelings as possible, whether you agree or not. Mr.Beck is honest in his opinions, unlike many of us.

C'mon, you can higher than two, right? I won't do your fact checking for you, but maybe you can count those steps again. Dr. Alveda King is not MLK's daughter, she's his niece you ignorant A-hole. Who the hell are you to judge her? Do you actually tell people you're a journalist? Damn you're stupid.

The article was pretty down to Earth, but perhaps a tad naive. I think the amount of angry Right-wing comments on the article is worthy of a laugh, though. Especially the ones who quite obviously didn't even read the article and are just angry that everyone doesn't think the way they do.

At least you didn't try to pretend to present an objective commentary like many left-leaning pundits. You came out of the (left) closet from the opening bell and simply put forth as many trite, mindlessly-biased, witty barbs as possible without revealing anything of substance about what really happened at the rally.
Common, you are a Doc right???

Not a bad article, but it was MLK's niece and he was 2 flights down not "2 steps" down. Glenn Beck is crazy, but if you're going to go after him do some editing.

Dr. Johnson, like yourself I certainly do not agree with all of Mr. Beck's ideas. I find that he is off-base on many issues. With that being said, I do not think that the people of who attended his rally were all fanatical GB fans. I think people are unhappy with the direction this country is headed. I am one of those people. Attending this rally is a way for Americans to express their unhappiness and concerns. Instead accusing Beck of being a "joke and a coward" why don't you look past your liberal bias and try and understand why so many Americans follow a man like Glenn Beck.
